Same way it is not sufficient for manager to first know the principles but he must also apply them in solving various managerial problems that is why, science and art are not mutually exclusive but they are complementary to each other like tea and biscuit, bread and butter etc. But as matter of fact, the art and science of managing are not so much conflicting as complementary. But when managers are observing they have to observe human beings and observation of human being cannot be purely logical and objective. Management as an Art: Art refers to the way of doing specific things; it indicates how an object can be achieved. In this sense, management is a science as it has also developed some systematized knowledge. It combines human and non-human resources in useful way so as to achieve desired results. Much of the controversy of management being as art or science is on account of the fact that the earlier captains of industry and managers have used intuition, hunches, commonsense, and experience in managing organizations.
Science is characterized by the following main features: 1. To conclude, we can say that science is the root and art is the fruit. Management is the art of getting things done by a group of people with the effective utilisation of available resources.
The above mentioned points clearly reveals that management combines features of both science as well as art.
Management process also follows the same pattern. So presently this feature of profession is not present but very soon it will be included. It establishes cause and effect relationship between two or more variables and underlines the principles governing their relationship.
At that time both skills are required art and science. Management is an art as well as science because before so many years a long debate run between great scientists for clear that management is science or arts but after all, it defines that management is art as well as science for following points.
Science has universal formulas and definition which also similar in management. So presently this feature of profession is not present in management but very soon it will be included with statutory backing.
Management as a profession
The essentials of a profession are: 1. It involves both the elements of art and science. Art is therefore, a skilful application of knowledge which entirely depends on the inherent capacity of a person and is learned from practice and experience. Principles Based on Experimentation In science, principles are evolved on the basis of experiments conducted in laboratories. The performance of 1st person will be better than 2nd. Science establishes general principles that guide organizations, while the art of human skill puts those principles to their best use. Generally, in art, more emphasis is given on acquiring knowledge through practical experience. Thus, we can say that management is an art therefore it requires application of certain principles rather it is an art of highest order because it deals with moulding the attitude and behavior of people at work towards desired goals. Management requires both skills and knowledge. Their actions are influenced by social norms and values. Science provide knowledge and management provide application of knowledge and skills.
It is the skill in conducting any human activity.
